Unter dem Begriff Fruchtfliegen sind im deutschen Sprachgebrauch zwei Familien der Fliegen (Unterordnung Brachycera) bekannt:

• die Drosophilidae (Taufliegen, auch Obst- oder Essigfliegen genannt) mit dem als biologisches Forschungsobjekt weltbekannten Vertreter Drosophila melanogaster und dem auch als Kirschessigfliege bekannten besonders häufigen Schädling (2009 von Südostasien nach Europa eingeschleppt)
• die Tephritidae (auch Bohrfliegen genannt)
